Miniaturization of Hard Disk Drive (HDD) has been widely recognized as one of the typical examples of “disruptive innovation” since the publication of “The Innovator’s Dilemma” by Clayton Christensen. I started my R&D carrier by designing flying heads for HDD. Observation of the R&D history of HDD based on my experience gives me a different view from Christensen’s claim. Christensen insisted that Miniaturization of HDD was a disruptive innovation. I will say “It is not true.” and “Miniaturization of HDD is one of the innovation drivers which can create new technology and markets.”
